Margaret Chamberlain

Margaret grew up in Weybridge, Surrey.  She has always loved drawing and remembers making up stories about family and animals and drawing detailed pictures of them from a very young age.  Among her favourite artists are Leonardo da Vinci (for his drawing), Ronald Searle and Mervyn Peake.  Two favourite books from her childhood are 'The Family at One End Street' and 'Pippi Longstockings'.  She loved the illustrations but it never occurred to Margaret that she could be an illustrator herself.  She went to Canterbury College of Art to study Graphic Design and then to The Royal College of Art for a post graduate degree in Illustration.  With the support and encouragement of her tutor, Quentin Blake, her career was launched.

She has lost count of how many books she has illustrated for authors - including Jeanne Willis, Kaye Umansky and Margaret Mahy.  Eventually, in 2008, Margaret wrote her first book called PLEASE DON'T TORMENT TOOTSIE!' and in the following year wrote her second 'MIMI AND MOOCHIE GO SHOPPING', both published by Hodder Children's Books.

She now lives in the Dorset coastal town of Lyme Regis with her cartoonist husband, Ian Dicks.  A very strange thing about Margaret is that  she has one blue eye and one brown eye!

"Every page thrums with comic energy.  Infant fans won't even realise they are learning to count at the same time." THE INDEPENDENT

"Margaret Chamberlain's illustrations suit the mood perfectly.  They're big and bold, with plenty of jollity on every page.  What's not to love about bees in dungarees or bats in top hats? Everything's vibrant and colourful.  It draws you in, and will have you poring over every page."

"Counting books are ten a penny, but the Newt In The Suit takes a slightly wackier approach and it pays off.  You'll love it whether you know how to count up to ten or not.  Recommended." THE BOOKBAG
