Sue was born in London but spent a lot of her childhood living in various parts of the country. Her early education was spent in a variety of very different schools ranging from strict Victorian with sit-up-straight benches to a country school with a cow-man to keep cows and children apart. In Sue's last school she discovered she had a talent for art and won a national competition.

Despite this she went on to study chemistry and physics and became a laboratory assistant. She also worked as a nurse in a hospice. But her interest in art grew and she studied at Leicester Polytechnic since when she's worked full-time as an author and illustrator producing more than forty books.

Sue is married and has two grown-up children, one of whom is studying illustration. She has homes in the pretty village of Uppingham and Brittany and divides her time between both.
